Do lash extensions damage your natural lashes? Applied properly and looked after well, they should not. Damage comes from how a set is applied, how heavy it is for your lashes and how it is cared for and removed, not from extensions themselves. Here is what to look for, so you can book with confidence.

What healthy application looks like

  • One extension per natural lash. Each extension is bonded to a single natural lash, never to several at once, so each lash can grow and shed freely.
  • The right weight. Extensions are chosen to suit the strength of your natural lashes, so they are not weighed down.
  • Nothing on the skin. The bond sits on the lash, not on the eyelid.
  • A plan. At The Ffrench Lash every set starts with a lash map designed around your eyes and your natural lashes.

What actually causes damage

  • Sets that are too heavy for the natural lashes underneath.
  • Lashes stuck together, which pulls on growing lashes.
  • Picking, rubbing and pulling at your set.
  • Removing extensions at home. Pulling them off takes natural lashes with them.
  • Poor aftercare, especially oil and build-up along the lash line.

Removing lash extensions safely

Never pull your extensions off. A Clean Slate removal (£20, 20 minutes) removes your extensions safely, with a refreshing cleanse to reset your natural lashes. If you are wearing another technician's set and want a new one, you can book a Same-Day Consultation (£15, 20 minutes) so your set can be designed on the day.

Allergies and sensitive eyes

Some people react to lash adhesive. If you are new to lash extensions, or have sensitive eyes or skin, we recommend a patch test at least 48 hours before your appointment. Message the studio to arrange one. Please tell us before your appointment about any allergies, sensitivities, eye conditions, recent eye surgery or infections. If extensions are not right for you on the day, we will not go ahead, for your safety.

If your eyes become itchy, swollen or sore after an appointment, contact the studio and speak to a pharmacist or your GP.

Do lash extensions hurt?

They should not. Your eyes stay closed throughout, in a calm, private studio. If anything stings or feels uncomfortable, tell us straight away.

How to keep your natural lashes healthy

  • Follow the advice in your complimentary aftercare bag.
  • Keep your lashes clean and oil-free.
  • Keep your hands off your set.
  • Book revives on time, within two weeks of your full set.
  • Have your set removed professionally.

Questions clients ask

Will my natural lashes be shorter after extensions?

Your natural lashes keep growing and shedding as normal. With proper application and care they should look the way they did before.

Should I take a break from extensions?

If your natural lashes are healthy and your set is applied and cared for properly, there is no set rule. If you are worried about your lashes, tell us at your consultation.

Are extensions safe during pregnancy?

Lash extensions can usually be applied during pregnancy, but hormonal changes can affect how long they last. Please let us know when you book.
