Good lash extension aftercare is the difference between a set that still looks beautiful at your revive and one that looks tired after a week. The care itself is simple. It just has to be done every day, starting the moment you leave the studio, and it is what makes your set last until your revive appointment.
Every client at The Ffrench Lash leaves with a complimentary aftercare bag, thoughtfully made to help you care for your new lashes. The advice inside is written for your set and always comes first. This guide explains the reasons behind it.
Why aftercare matters
Each extension is bonded to one natural lash. Anything that weakens that bond, or stresses the natural lash underneath, shortens the life of your set. Aftercare protects both: the bond, so your extensions stay put, and your natural lashes, so they stay healthy for your next set.
The first day
The bond is at its most delicate while it settles. In the first day:
- Follow the timings in your aftercare bag for when your lashes can first get wet.
- Avoid steam, saunas and very hot showers.
- Do not rub your eyes or touch your lashes, even if they feel new.
- Leave eye make-up for another day.
Cleansing your lash extensions
It feels natural to keep lash extensions away from water, but clean lashes last longer. Oil, make-up and everyday build-up sit along the lash line and weaken the bond over time. Once your set has settled, cleanse your lashes gently and regularly with a lash-safe cleanser, rinse, and pat dry with a soft towel. A clean, soft brush helps to set them back in place.
Products to avoid
Oil is the main thing to keep away from your lashes. Oil-based cleansers, cleansing balms and rich eye creams can soften the bond. Check labels on anything you use around your eyes, and if you are unsure about a product, ask us before you use it.
Make-up with lash extensions
One of the best parts of a well-designed set is that you do not need mascara. If you wear eye make-up, choose lash-safe products and remove them gently, without pulling. Our guide to mascara and make-up with lash extensions covers this in detail.
Everyday habits that protect your set
- Hands off. Rubbing, picking or pulling at loose lashes takes natural lashes with them.
- Brush gently. A quick brush in the morning keeps lashes neat and stops them crossing.
- Mind your sleep. Sleeping face down presses lashes into the pillow every night.
- Never remove them yourself. Pulling extensions off at home damages your natural lashes. A Clean Slate removal (£20, 20 minutes) takes them off safely, with a refreshing cleanse.
Signs to look out for
Some redness or watering straight after an appointment can happen while your eyes settle. If your eyes become itchy, swollen or sore, or the feeling does not pass, contact the studio and speak to a pharmacist or your GP. If you are new to lash extensions or have sensitive eyes or skin, we recommend a patch test at least 48 hours before your appointment. Message the studio to arrange one.
Questions clients ask
Can I get my lash extensions wet?
Yes, once they have settled. Follow the timings in your aftercare bag, then cleanse gently and pat dry.
Do I need special products?
Your aftercare bag includes what you need to care for your new lashes. For anything else around your eyes, oil-free is the rule to remember.
What if a few lashes come out?
A few lashes shedding each day is normal, because your natural lashes shed too. We explain why in how long lash extensions last.
